STUDENT AFFAIRS
OFFICE OF THE VICE CHANCELLOR - ASSOCIATED STUDENTS GRADUATE STUDENT ASSOCIATION October 22, 2015
As Halloween approaches we are reminded that it can be a festive time of year but not without its risks that can be avoided. This Halloween we encourage all UC San Diego students to make sound decisions and to look out for one another's personal safety and wellbeing. We also encourage students to think carefully about the costumes you choose to wear, the behaviors you choose to participate in, and the parties you choose to hold/attend. We have learned from previous experiences that themed parties and costumes, apparel, or images relating to people or cultures can be offensive and damaging to our campus community because they exploit cultural history and people’s experiences based on harmful stereotypes. Racially charged stereotypes have no place at UC San Diego as they go against UC San Diego’s Principles of Community. A decision to mock others and their culture shows a lack of respect, intolerance, and overall poor judgment. In addition, because of the ubiquitous nature of technology and social media, a poor decision made today can live on indefinitely on the internet. At UC San Diego we expect all members of our community to use good judgment and look out for the wellbeing and safety of fellow students. We encourage Tritons to think and make educated choices this Halloween.
