ALL ACADEMICS, STAFF AND STUDENTS AT UC SAN DIEGO

SUBJECT:    Join the Campus Community for Founders Celebration 2015

I invite all campus members to join your colleagues at Founders Celebration 2015 to commemorate UC San Diego’s 55th anniversary on Thursday, Nov. 12, and Friday, Nov. 13. Celebrate the ways in which UC San Diego scholarship, community, and commitment have created a force for positive change in our region, nation and world.

A complete schedule of our Founders Celebration may be found at http://founders.ucsd.edu/. Here is an overview of the free activities:

Thursday, Nov. 12
The annual Founders Symposium will take place from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 12, in the Price Center East Ballroom. The event features short talks from extraordinary minds–our very own world-renowned faculty members who are conducting research that is transforming lives. Angela Booker, Jennifer Burney, Craig Callender, Alan Daly, Paul Niehaus and Emily Roxworthy will speak. Arrive a little early and join us at the Cross-Cultural Center in the Price Center from 4:00 to 4:45 p.m. for a showcase featuring undergraduate social innovators.

Friday, Nov. 13
Founders Day recognizes UC San Diego’s founders, including Roger Revelle, whose vision was to attract distinctive scholars to our campus. In tribute to this spirit, the Founders Day Program honors the 2015 recipients of the Revelle Medal, the highest award given by the Chancellor to a current or former faculty member. Join us in the Price Center East Ballroom from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. as we honor the 2015 Revelle Medal recipients: Cecil Lytle, Hugh “Bud” Mehan, and Susan Shirk.

The Founders Day Festival fills Town Square from noon to 2:00 p.m. Enjoy a kaleidoscope of student entertainment and interactive exhibits from academic divisions and departments, and sample tasty treats.

For students, Hullabaloo kicks off at 8:00 p.m. through midnight in Matthews Quad and Town Square. A partnership with AS Concerts and Events, Hullabaloo is a student-only festival with live music, free food and games. Student ID required. For more information, visit http://hullabaloo.ucsd.edu

Wednesday, Nov. 4; Thursday, Nov. 5
Concurrent with the Founders Celebration, the Academic Senate Faculty Research Lectures program recognizes two faculty whose research has made a significant contribution to the advancement of knowledge. Join us in honoring the 2015 awardees.
Nov. 4 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in Atkinson Pavilion: Yen-Le Espiritu, “Critical Refugee Studies: The Vietnam War and Militarized Refuge(es)”
Nov. 5 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in Atkinson Pavilion: Anita Raj, “The Global Health Impact of Gender Inequalities: Girl Child Marriage and Violence Against Women”

In order to allow employees the opportunity to attend Founders Celebration events, two hours of administrative leave with pay has been approved. Managers and supervisors are asked to allow employees to attend, as long as the absence does not infringe upon the performance of required job duties or patient care.

If you have questions about the Founders Celebration, please call Special Events & Protocol at (858) 534-6386 or email sep@ucsd.edu.

I look forward to celebrating Founders Day with you.
