SUBJECT:    Integrated Digital Infrastructure (IDI) Call for Proposals in Fiscal Year 2015/16 Deadline is June 15, 2015

The Office of Research Affairs (ORA) and Larry Smarr, Director of the Integrated Digital Infrastructure (IDI) at UC San Diego, are pleased to invite proposals for funding of IDI Transformational Projects and Digital Research Platforms for fiscal year 2015/16. The deadline for application for this funding opportunity is June 15, 2015, with funding to be available in September 2015. Detailed information is available at the following web page:
http://idi.ucsd.edu/about/announcements/call-for-proposals-2015.html

These funding opportunities are for one-year projects to work with campus IT providers (ACMS, ACT, Calit2/Qualcomm Institute, The Library, and SDSC) to support the UCSD Strategic Plan by developing and promoting the use of novel digital, computing, and/or networking technologies. These one-time, early-technology adopter grants have the goal of exploring the application of new digital methodologies in research and education.

Funding for a Transformational Project typically ranges from $1,000-$75,000. Generally the funding of a Transformational Project is significantly augmented by IDI-coordinated IT responses to the needs of the investigator. Transformational Projects aim to enhance the research of a single laboratory and/or teaching a class (or related set of classes).

Funding for a Digital Research Platform can range from $50,000-$300,000. Digital Research Platforms serve the needs of multiple faculty members, research staff, and students. They typically join two or more technologies (e.g., end-to-end high-speed networking, high-performance computing, high-speed storage, data management, specialized research instruments) into a unified but distributed environment in which advanced research can be performed. They aim to substantially enhance UCSD's research capabilities and make investigators more competitive for external funding.

Faculty with questions about how IDI can help them or who would like to connect with their peers to discuss big data related issues are invited to participate in the forums on the IDI Community web site (http://idicommunity.ucsd.edu/). To contact the IDI team directly, e-mail idi-team@ucsd.edu or idi-claire@ucsd.edu.
