ALL ACADEMIC, STAFF AND STUDENTS AT UCSD

SUBJECT:    Timely Warning - Residential Burglary

On May 21, 2015 at 10:55 am, UC San Diego Police Department received a report of a burglary to an occupied residence in the Warren Apartments, which had occurred between 2:00 am and 8:00 am in the morning.

The reporting party stated an unknown subject or subjects entered through an unlocked sliding door on the first floor and made entry into the apartment. The residents of the apartment were asleep at the time of the burglary. When the victims awoke, they discovered two laptop computers and a television missing.

There is no suspect information at this time.

General Safety Considerations:

* Ensure doors and windows are closed and locked. Make sure all doors and easily accessible windows (usually those on the ground floor) are fully closed and locked. During periods of high temperatures, use a lock or item which only allows the window to open be opened small distances.

* Be aware of your surroundings. If you see someone in the residential areas that do not appear to belong or who are acting suspiciously, call the UCSD Police Department immediately at 858-534-HELP (4357) or 9-1-1 (emergencies). Know the location of campus emergency telephones on routes to and from campus destinations.
* Avoid displaying and/or placing high value items close to open windows. Items such as computers, cellular phones, wallets, and purses that can be easily grabbed from open windows and also may be incentives for criminals to try and enter the residence.
* Be alert and aware. Pay full attention to who is around when you leave and return to your residence. If returning at night, leave a light on inside as a visual deterrent.

If you discover someone inside your residence:

If possible, immediately leave your residence and go to a safe area (i.e. a neighbor or someplace public). Contact the police as soon as possible. If unable to leave your residence, secure yourself and family members in a safe location, turn on all available lights, and contact the police immediately.
