SUBJECT:    CONSTRUCTION ALERT – Peterson Hill - University Center Bike and Pedestrian Improvements Project- Final Phase B

Project Description/Location:

Construction of the final Phase B of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Improvements to Peterson Hill will start on Friday May 29th with anticipated completion before September 2015. The final phase of work improvements will include the new pedestrian stair, accessible ramp, grove reforestation and associated landscape improvements on the north end of Peterson Hill. Phase A was completed prior to May 28 and included all the bicycle bypass lanes going east toward Library Walk and south toward Mandeville Lane.

Immediate Street Traffic, Bicycle and Pedestrian Impact:

East and west pedestrian circulation from Ridge Walk to Library Walk at Peterson Hall and the Faculty Club will be significantly impacted during the four month duration of construction. The affected area will have intermittent closures with a flagman directing traffic. There will be clear signage indicating detours and construction areas. All pedestrian traffic will be routed through the new bicycle lanes going east/west as well as north/south. All other wheel traffic is asked to dismount in this area through the duration of construction for safety purposes.

A construction fence will enclose all sides of this final phase including the existing concrete walkway just south of Cognitive Science, as far west towards Peterson Hall, and east towards the junction of Library Walk. Pedestrian exit signage will be clearly posted from all areas around Cognitive Science through the duration of construction. Pedestrians are required to follow any exit/detour signs and walk on existing sidewalks as posted. Bicyclists and all other wheeled traffic are required to follow signs, dismount on the new bicycle pathways, and remain alert near construction areas.

We recognize this is a major circulation element and have taken measures to provide a safe alternative pathway during this period. Normal bicycle traffic will be reinstated at the completion of construction. We recognize the significant inconvenience, but it is necessary in order to construct these much needed improvements.
