November 7, 2016
I encourage all faculty, staff, and students to participate in International Education Week (IEW) to be held this year from November 14-18. IEW is as an opportunity to celebrate world cultures, peoples, and language while affirming the critical roles that international education and exchange play in fostering mutual understanding and world peace. Inaugurated by President Bill Clinton in 2000, IEW is a joint initiative between the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education. IEW is celebrated annually in more than 100 countries across the world to symbolize the importance of global exchange and cross-cultural learning. IEW will commence on Monday, November 14, with a flag parade departing from the Price Center Plaza and a grand opening ceremony featuring a keynote address and variety of international food and merchandise vendors at the International House Great Hall. Additional featured events during the week include an International Film Festival, Triton World Cup Soccer Tournament, Global Forum, and Closing Ceremony featuring an international fashion show as part of the weekly International Friday Café. In recognition of the 12th anniversary of this annual event, I am approving one hour of administrative leave with pay so that employees may attend one or more IEW events. Supervisors are asked to allow employees one hour of administrative leave with pay when the absence does not infringe upon the performance of required job duties or patient care. For more information, please visit https://iew.ucsd.edu, email Courtney Giordano at clgiordano@ucsd.edu or Shawna Hook-Held at sheld@ucsd.edu.
