OFFICE OF THE EXECUTIVE VICE CHANCELLOR

December 8, 2016

ALL AT UC SAN DIEGO

SUBJECT:    Dean of the Division of Physical Sciences

We are pleased to welcome Steven E. Boggs as the next Dean of the Division of Physical Sciences, effective January 1, 2017.

Dr. Boggs is the current Chair of the highly ranked physics department at UC Berkeley, a role he has held since 2013. He previously served from 2001 to 2013 as Associate Director of the Berkeley Space Sciences Laboratory and from 2001 to 2006 as Associate Director of Berkeley's California Space Institute. An experimental astrophysicist, Dr. Boggs will hold a faculty appointment in the department of Physics and the Center for Astrophysics and Space Sciences (CASS) at UC San Diego. He will also hold the Chancellor's Associates Endowed Chair in Physics. His research focuses on the development of X-ray, gamma-ray and cosmic-ray instruments to study physical processes in the universe. His primary interest is the detailed measurement of radioactive nuclei produced in the inner regions of supernova explosions as probes of the fundamental physical processes in which they are created.

Boggs received his bachelor's degree in physics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and his Ph.D. in physics from UC Berkeley. He spent two-years as a prestigious Millikan postdoctoral fellow at Caltech then returned to Berkeley in 2001 as an assistant professor, where he was quickly recognized for his excellence as a scientist and educator. From 2007 to 2008 Dr. Boggs was named a UC Berkeley Presidential Chair for teaching excellence. In 2014, he was named a Fellow of the American Physical Society.

Steven Boggs' leadership of Berkeley's physics department and his strong record of achievement as a scientist and educator demonstrate his ability to lead UC San Diego's Division of Physical Sciences at this critical time. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Boggs on his appointment and in welcoming him to UC San Diego.
