SUBJECT: Timely Warning – Armed Robbery

On February 17, 2016 at approximately 8:35 p.m., the UC San Diego Police Department received a report of an armed robbery with a knife that occurred on UCSD property near the route 101 bus stop by the North Torrey Pines Road and Expedition Way intersection.

An unknown male suspect approached the victim from behind as he was standing just off the sidewalk. The suspect pushed what the victim believed was a large knife into his back and demanded the victim’s backpack, which contained the victim’s cell phone and other property.

The suspect was described as an adult male, 30-35 years old, 200 pounds, wearing a black ski mask, a black hooded sweatshirt, black gloves, and blue jeans. After getting the backpack from the victim, the suspect fled the area on a bicycle and was last seen riding it southbound on La Jolla Shores Drive.

If you see someone matching the suspect's description, do not approach him. Call 9-1-1, UC San Diego PD at (858)534-4357, or San Diego PD at (619)531-2000.

This case is being investigated by the UC San Diego Police Department. If you have information about this incident, please contact UCSD PD at (858)534-4357 or send an email to detective@ucsd.edu

General Safety Considerations:

• Avoid displaying and carrying large sums of money in public. Only carry the credit cards you need.
• Be careful with purses, wallets, or other valuables. Carry items close to your body, but do not loop or wrap straps around you. A purse snatcher could injure you. Keep wallets inside a pocket.
• Be alert and aware. Pay full attention to who is around you when you are in public.
If a robbery should occur:
• If you are confronted, COOPERATE! Give the criminal what he/she asks for — wallet, keys, jewelry, credit cards and electronics. Your life is more valuable than replaceable possessions. Don’t make sudden moves or try to apprehend the criminal yourself. Concentrate on remembering the suspect’s description and call police immediately.
• Your safety is most important. Do what the robber says and don’t stall.
• If the suspect claims he has a gun, knife, or other weapon in his pocket, believe the suspect.
