SUBJECT:    2016 UC San Diego Observance of International Women’s Day

In coordination with the campus recognition of Women’s History Month in March, we are pleased to announce the Tuesday, March 8, 2016 campus celebration of International Women’s Day, an opportunity to note the achievements of women, to learn about women’s experiences around the world, and to draw attention to the need for further progress toward equity. This year’s main event is K-Dramas, Pop Culture, and Intersectionality: A Conversation on Imperfect Activism with Dodai Stewart. The event will be held in the Multipurpose Room of the Student Services Center on March 8. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the program will begin at 7 p.m.

The keynote speaker, Dodai Stewart, is the Director of Culture Coverage at Fusion, a multi-platform media company launched in 2013. She was previously the deputy editor (and one of the founding editors) at Jezebel.com, and has written for various publications, including Entertainment Weekly, Modern Bride, New York Magazine, Glamour, and The New York Times.

In connection to UC San Diego’s 2016 International Women’s Day theme, #ActivismLooksLike, Ms. Stewart’s talk will focus on themes of activism, self-care, and intersectionality as they relate to pop culture. Additional International Women’s Day celebrations will take place throughout the week. Details and a complete schedule of events may be viewed at: http://iwd.ucsd.edu. Supervisors are asked to allow staff members to attend this event, as long as the absence does not infringe upon the performance of required job duties and patient care.

Inquiries regarding International Women’s Day events may be directed to Cecily Nelson-Alford (cnelsona@ucsd.edu), Chair of UC San Diego’s International Women's Day Planning Committee.
