SUBJECT:    CONSTRUCTION ALERT – Regents Road Widening & Athena Way Projects: Start of Construction

Project Location/Description:

Starting in mid-July 2016, the City of San Diego will widen Regents Road to a four-lane street from the existing two lanes and incorporate new bike lanes. This will occur on Regents Road between Genesee Avenue and Executive Drive. Regents Road provides access to UC San Diego’s East Campus including the Medical Center, parking facilities, graduate housing facilities, and the UC San Diego Science Research Park. Athena Way, a connector road between Athena Circle and Regents Road at the terminus of Eastgate Mall, will be built in conjunction with the Regents Road widening. Access onto the UC San Diego East Campus will be available via Athena Way prior to the finish of the Regents Road widening project.

Immediate Street Traffic and Pedestrian Impacts:

The widening of the street will occur in phases and impacts will be intermittent. Two-way traffic and pedestrian access will continually be available. Motorists are urged to slow down in the area and all travelers are encouraged to anticipate possible traffic delays. The Athena Way project site will be enclosed with temporary fencing in mid-July 2016. Construction of the connection of Athena Way to Regents Road will intermittently impact vehicular and pedestrian traffic on the west side of Regents Road.
