ALL ACADEMICS, STAFF AND STUDENTS AT UC SAN DIEGO

SUBJECT:    Launching of Free Speech Website

Free speech is a cornerstone not only of the U.S. Constitution, but also of academic freedom. As a public research university, UC San Diego supports everyone’s right to free speech. The pursuit of knowledge can only be carried out if we are able to explore and express all ideas freely and openly.

UC San Diego encourages free, civil discourse that is respectful and reasoned. We believe that the respectful and reasoned exchange of ideas is the best way to persuade and learn from others. Moreover, free debate has the power to expose falsehood and promote truths. Free discourse, however, is not always civil, respectful, or reasoned, and can sometimes be deeply offensive and hurtful. While at times the exchange of controversial ideas and opinions may be distressing to our community members, it is important to recognize that the university acts as a home for diverse and sometimes conflicting ideas and opinions.

It is the University’s role to provide individuals with the skills and knowledge to engage in civil and free discourse so that each person can draw their own conclusions.

We encourage you to learn how you can use your voice at our newly-launched website freespeech.ucsd.edu
