ALL ACADEMICS, STAFF AND STUDENTS AT UC SAN DIEGO

SUBJECT:    13th Annual International Education Week (IEW) Celebration

I encourage all faculty, staff, and students to participate in International Education Week (IEW) to be held this year from November 13-17. IEW is as an opportunity to celebrate world cultures, peoples and language while affirming the critical roles that international education and exchange play in fostering mutual understanding and world peace.

Inaugurated by President Bill Clinton in 2000, IEW is a joint initiative between the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education. IEW is celebrated annually in more than 100 countries across the world to symbolize the importance of global exchange and cross-cultural learning.

IEW will commence on Monday, November 13, with a flag parade departing from the Price Center Plaza and a grand opening ceremony featuring a keynote address and a variety of international food vendors at the International House Great Hall. Other key events scheduled during the week are Global Scholars, Global Impact: An Evening Celebrating UC San Diego’s International Faculty and Scholars, a Global Forum examining parental leave around the world, a Passport to Culture event featuring the food and culture of India, and an international fashion show during the weekly International Friday Café, held at the Great Hall. The week will conclude with the 3rd annual Triton World Cup soccer tournament.

In recognition of the 13th anniversary of this annual event, I am approving one hour of administrative leave with pay so that employees may attend one or more IEW events. Supervisors are asked to allow employees one hour of administrative leave with pay when the absence does not infringe upon the performance of required job duties or patient care.
