SUBJECT:    CONSTRUCTION ALERT – Mid-Coast Light Rail Transit Project: Campus Point Drive Impacts

Project Location/Description:

Construction activities for the Mid-Coast Light Rail Transit Project continue with the construction of the elevated LRT track throughout campus. There will be several future impacts to the roadways near the intersection of Voigt Drive and Campus Point Drive in order to accommodate material deliveries and concrete pours for the LRT. On Monday, December 18 at 9:00pm, there will be a full road closure of Voigt Drive, east of Campus Point Drive, and of the North bound lanes on Campus Point Drive until the next morning at 5:00am. After this full closure, there will be intermittent drive lane impacts in the evenings on Campus Point Drive and Voigt Drive through December of 2018. UC San Diego Health Buildings will remain accessible through Campus Point Drive. Any future full closures of Campus Point Drive will be communicated through a separate Construction Alert.

Immediate Parking Lot, Street Traffic, and Pedestrian Impacts:

Patient, staff, visitor, and emergency vehicle access to the UCSD Medical Center will remain available at all times.

During the December 18th night closure, all traffic to and from UC San Diego Health will be shifted onto the Southbound lanes of Campus Point Drive, with one lane of traffic available in each direction. All pedestrian and vehicular traffic on Voigt Drive will be detoured to the available lanes on Campus Point Drive. During all upcoming road closures and lane impacts, traffic conditions will change to accommodate construction activities and all vehicular and pedestrian traffic is asked to be aware and watch for changing conditions. There will be a flashing red signal at the intersection of Campus Point Drive and Voigt Drive while drive lanes are impacted and a construction flagging crew will be actively managing traffic flow during times of transition. When detours and lane changes are in effect, additional detour signage will be provided to help patients, staff, visitors, and emergency vehicles reach the hospital and emergency department.

In an effort to minimize confusion and to alleviate traffic congestion during peak travel times, nighttime work and construction sequencing have been carefully incorporated in the construction effort. We suggest that vehicular traffic consider using Regents Road to Health Sciences Drive and the newly opened Athena Way as an alternate entrance/exit from UC San Diego Health buildings.

Thank you for your patience as we continue to improve the UC San Diego experience.
