U.S. Supreme Court Decision Affecting Implementation of Executive Order 13780

CAMPUS NOTICE

ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

June 29, 2017

ALL ACADEMICS, STAFF AND STUDENTS AT UC SAN DIEGO
(including Health Sciences)

SUBJECT:     U.S. Supreme Court Decision Affecting Implementation of Executive Order 13780

Dear UC San Diego Campus Community,

This notification is to provide updated information regarding the Executive Order restricting travel and to offer continued support to the UC San Diego community.

The decision made by the U.S. Supreme Court on June 26 contains an important exception stating that the travel restriction cannot be applied to an individual who has "a credible claim of a bona fide relationship with a person or entity in the United States." Therefore, UC San Diego faculty, staff, and students, continuing and incoming, from the affected countries — Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen — should be able to travel by providing proof of their connection to our university. Such documentation may include letters of admission, student, staff, or faculty identification, written job offers and/or appointment letters and contracts. Most students and scholars, therefore, should continue to be exempt from the 90-day travel ban.

At this time, we recommend that foreign nationals from the six Designated Countries who are currently in the United States and who may continue to face future challenges to re-entering the United States during and/or after the temporary suspension, should consult with their immigration counsel before leaving the country.

As outlined in the campus notice dated March 21, 2017, “Updates and Campus Resources for Those Affected by Executive Orders on Immigration http://adminrecords.ucsd.edu/Notices/2017/2017-3-21-2.html," the following resources and support are available to UC San Diego community members:
