We are pleased to announce the appointment of Associate Professor K. Wayne Yang (Ethnic Studies) as Acting Provost of John Muir College and Professor Emeritus Ann Craig (Political Science) as Interim Provost of Sixth College, effective September 1, 2017. Dr. Yang received his Ph.D. in Social and Cultural Studies from UC Berkeley. He has been a member of the Ethnic Studies department faculty since 2006. His research focuses on the role of youth popular culture and pedagogy in the emergence of social movements. Dr. Yang has a strong record of service to the university. He has served twice as Interim Director of the Sixth College Academic Programs, as Director of Undergraduate Studies for the Department of Ethnic Studies, and as a member of the Standing Committee for the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion graduation requirement. He served on the Council of Undergraduate Education and was recently appointed to the Academic Senate Educational Policy Committee. He is also a recipient of the Academic Senate Distinguished Teaching Award. Dr. Craig received her Ph.D. in Comparative Politics, Latin America from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She joined the UC San Diego Political Science department faculty in 1979. An expert in Latin American Politics, her research focuses on social movements and public policy in Mexico. She retired in 2009, following fifteen years of distinguished service as Provost of Eleanor Roosevelt College. Since her retirement, Dr. Craig has engaged in a large number of substantial, wide-ranging contributions to the university community. She served as Acting then Interim Revelle College Provost in 2012-2013 and Vice President, President, and Past President of the Emeriti Association from 2010-2013, Chair of the Academic Senate Committee on International Education from 2010-2014. She served as a Member of the system-wide University Committee on International Education from 2010-12 and most recently as a member of the Seventh College Pre-Planning Committee. Dr. Craig is also actively involved in the Chancellor's Scholars Mentor Program and received recognition for her continued service with a Dickson Emeriti Award earlier this year. Please join us in thanking Drs. Yang and Craig for their commitment to lead Muir and Sixth Colleges, respectively, during this interim period.
