ACADEMIC AFFAIRS August 9, 2017
ALL ACADEMICS, STAFF AND STUDENTS AT UC SAN DIEGO
I am pleased to announce that John Moore, Muir College Provost and Professor of Linguistics, has been appointed as Interim Dean of Undergraduate Education, effective September 1, 2017, following the conclusion of Dr. Barbara Sawrey’s decade of distinguished service as AVC and Dean of Undergraduate Education. Dr. Moore has been a member of the faculty since 1992. He received his Ph.D. in 1991 from University of California, Santa Cruz. A highly regarded scholar in theoretical syntax, his work has concentrated on Spanish syntax and the grammatical encoding of semantic arguments. His research includes work on the Moro Project, Border Spanish, and Heritage Persian. He is a gifted musician, widely known as a flamenco guitarist. Dr. Moore has a demonstrated history of commitment to undergraduate education, campus service, and contributions to diversity in teaching, research and service, which will serve him well as Interim Dean. He has provided strong leadership as Chair of the Council of Provosts (COP) during the past two years. Prior to his appointment as Provost in 2013 he served as Chair of the Academic Senate Committee on Academic Personnel (CAP), as Chair of the Department of Linguistics, and as a department diversity representative. In addition to teaching core undergraduate courses on syntax, historical linguistics, and Spanish linguistics, he has taught freshman seminars on the structure and history of flamenco. He has also been involved in the Global Seminar Program since its inception, winning a "Partner in International Education" award in 2011. Please join me in offering Dr. Moore best wishes and support in this interim role, while a search for a permanent Undergraduate Dean continues. Beginning September 1, he can be reached at DUE@ucsd.edu or (858) 822-4358. Please also join me in thanking Revelle College Provost Paul Yu, who will serve as Acting COP Chair on Dr. Moore’s behalf.
