ALL ACADEMICS, STAFF AND STUDENTS AT UC SAN DIEGO

SUBJECT:    Appointment of the Vice Chancellor – Student Affairs

We are delighted to announce that following an extensive national search, Dr. Alysson Satterlund has been appointed Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (VCSA), effective November 1, 2018.

As VCSA, Dr. Satterlund will serve as the campus’ chief student affairs officer, providing executive-level leadership and vision for a comprehensive range of initiatives, services and policies to ensure an extraordinary student experience at UC San Diego. The position reports to the Executive Vice Chancellor with a dotted line reporting relationship to the Chancellor. Key areas of oversight and partnership for the VCSA include admissions and enrollment management, student retention and success, student leadership and engagement, residential life and housing, student health services, counseling services, career services, athletics and recreation. The VCSA serves as a member of the Chancellor’s cabinet, working in close collaboration with academic and administrative Vice Chancellors and with the Academic Senate to support the vision and advance the mission of UC San Diego.

Dr. Satterlund has served as the Associate Vice President and Dean of Students at CSU San Bernardino for the last four years, and has over twenty years of progressive student affairs leadership experience in both public and private higher education environments. Her flexible and collaborative approach to leadership is an excellent match for our institution. A proven student advocate, she also brings tremendous knowledge and practical experience that align well with UC San Diego’s strategic vision to be a student-centered public university.

At CSU San Bernardino, Dr. Satterlund has provided leadership in the administration of a range of policies and services across two campuses (San Bernardino and Palm Desert) related to student conduct, engagement and wellbeing, recreation, and student facilities. She has provided oversight for campus resource centers and led the CARE Team, which helps to prepare for and respond to situations presented by students. A first-generation college graduate, Dr. Satterlund is deeply committed to and has led strategic campus-wide initiatives related to diversity and inclusion and student retention and success, including the development of an award-winning summer college readiness and residential developmental math and English program. Moreover, she has partnered with Academic Affairs to develop, implement and assess programs and services that support and retain first generation and students from under-resourced schools.

Dr. Satterlund holds a Ph.D. in Interpersonal & Organizational Communication from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a Master of Arts in Information & Communication Studies and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from CSU Chico. She has certificates of participation from Harvard University’s Institute for Educational Management and the University of San Diego’s Women’s Higher Education Leadership Institute. Dr. Satterlund has served as a coordinator for the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators' (NASPA) AVP Institute, served as one of 14 national partners in the Culture of Respect’s Blueprint pilot initiative to develop institutional tools to address campus sexual violence and is often an invited panelist to present on issues of institutional interventions that impact student wellness, student development and academic success.

We sincerely thank all of the members of the search committee for their extraordinary efforts to conduct this national search. We also appreciate the wide-ranging input from members of the campus community who participated in the search process.

We also extend our deep gratitude to Mr. Drew Calandrella, who has been a superb leader of the Student Affairs division over the last several months. His wise counsel and steady hand as we dealt with a variety of pressing issues during a period of continued growth have been invaluable. To continue to build on his good work, we have asked Drew to stay on for a few more months as a Senior Advisor to the Executive Vice Chancellor. Drew plays a critical leadership role in several large-scale projects and it is important to keep the work moving forward without interruption while the new VCSA transitions in.

Please join us in thanking Drew Calandrella for his service as Interim Vice Chancellor-Student Affairs and, especially, in welcoming Dr. Satterlund to UC San Diego for what we anticipate will be a long and productive tenure.
