ALL ACADEMICS, STAFF AND STUDENTS AT UC SAN DIEGO

SUBJECT:    Appointment of Interim Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, Drew Calandrella

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Drew Calandrella as Interim Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (IVCSA), effective March 12, 2018.

As Interim VCSA, Mr. Calandrella will serve as the campus’ chief student affairs officer, providing executive-level leadership and vision in the administration of a comprehensive range of initiatives, services, and policies to assure an extraordinary student experience at UC San Diego. The position reports to the Executive Vice Chancellor and serves as a member of the Chancellor’s cabinet, working in close collaboration with academic and administrative Vice Chancellors and with the Academic Senate to support the vision and advance the mission of UC San Diego. Key areas of oversight and/or partnership include admissions and enrollment management, student retention and success, student leadership and engagement, residential life and housing, student health services, counseling services, career services and athletics/recreation.

Mr. Calandrella will bring to UC San Diego over thirty years of experience in higher education, including serving as the chief student affairs officer on three campuses. He served most recently as Vice President for Student Affairs at CSU Chico from 2006 to 2017, where he was widely recognized for his deep commitment to diversity and overall student success as central to the academic enterprise. At Chico he partnered with campus colleagues to develop and refine high impact practices in advising, mentoring and student success. Under his leadership, CSU Chico expanded the EOP Summer Bridge and Supplemental Instruction programs, extended the Orientation and New Student Programs to a year-long model to better serve a diverse student population, and the Accessibility Resource Center was expanded to include an Office of Accessible Technology and Services. Mr. Calandrella was recognized with a campus Lifetime Accomplishment in Diversity Award for his contributions to the development and staffing of the Diversity and Inclusion Office, establishment of the Cross Cultural Leadership Center, and offices for DREAM students and Tribal Relations. In 2016, he received the highest honor of the American College Personnel Association (ACPA), the Diamond Honoree Award, which recognizes outstanding and sustained contributions to higher education and student affairs.

Please join us in welcoming Drew Calandrella to UC San Diego and in supporting him in this critical interim role. A nationwide search for a new VCSA will commence shortly.
