ALL ACADEMICS, STAFF AND STUDENTS AT UC SAN DIEGO (including Health System)

SUBJECT:    Update on Leadership Roles in Health Sciences

I want to keep you informed about the continued growth, organizational changes and priorities at UC San Diego Health Sciences, including the appointment of Dr. David A. Brenner to Vice Chancellor of Health Sciences and the new appointment of Dr. Steven Garfin to Interim Dean of the School of Medicine.

In his role of Vice Chancellor of Health Sciences, Dr. Brenner is focused on the overall leadership of the health sciences enterprise, which includes the School of Medicine, Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and UC San Diego Health. In collaboration with the campus, Dr. Brenner will develop the long-term strategy for our health sciences research, education and patient care portfolios, with the goal of attracting and sustaining funding and philanthropic support.

Dr. Brenner is charged with developing a blueprint that spurs scientific and clinical productivity and growth through the efficient, insightful use of resources. Dr. Brenner, along with Chief Executive Officer for UC San Diego Health Patty Maysent, will continue to be part of the Chancellor’s Cabinet and advance collaborations across UC San Diego.

Priorities for the Vice Chancellor of Health Sciences include the development of a population health program, continued innovation within medical education, and further alignment and refinement of the medical school’s clinical teaching and research missions with our hospitals and clinics. Direct reports to the Vice Chancellor include the Dean of the School of Medicine, the Dean of the School of Pharmacy, the CEO of UC San Diego Health, the CEO of the Clinical Practice Organization/Dean of Clinical Affairs, the Director of the Moores Cancer Center, the Director of the Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute, and the Associate Vice Chancellors for Health Sciences.

As interim dean of the School of Medicine, Dr. Steven Garfin, is responsible for managing the operations of the medical school, its departments, and its research units. The chairs of School of Medicine, the Dean for Medical Education, and the directors of the research cores will directly report to the Dean. Dr. Garfin will work with the department chairs to optimize their fiscal performance and to help them sustain or grow their research, clinical care and teaching responsibilities. Dr. Garfin will become the chief recruitment officer for the School of Medicine. He will ensure, where appropriate, that requests for new faculty complement the overall, long-term needs of the school and health system, and that we maintain our high standards for a talented, diverse faculty.

Dr. Garfin will collaborate with Dr. Brenner, Patty Maysent, CEO of UC San Diego Health, and the departments to align research and teaching activities within the hospital environment to ensure superb clinical quality and outcomes.

A current organizational chart can be viewed at: https://medschool.ucsd.edu/about/leadership/Pages/default.aspx. UC San Diego Health Sciences enjoys a stellar and much-deserved reputation for contributions to science and patient care. I am excited for the year ahead as we continue our impressive trajectory upward.
