I am pleased to invite internal applications and nominations for the
position of Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (Sr.
AVC-AA). The scope of this position will merge many of the
responsibilities of the current Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for
Academic Planning and Resources (currently Dr. William Hodgkiss) with
some of the responsibilities of the Associate Vice Chancellor for
Academic Personnel (currently Dr. Tamara Wall).
The Sr. AVC-AA will serve as a principal advisor to the Executive Vice
Chancellor (EVC), supporting the EVC’s academic priorities in alignment
with the Strategic Plan, and also representing and standing in for the
EVC as needed. The Sr. AVC-AA will oversee and manage the Senate and
non-Senate academic personnel process with delegated approval authority
for a range of actions. In coordination with the EVC, this person will
serve as the primary liaison with the Committee on Academic Personnel
(CAP). The incumbent will also administer the planning and
implementation of new campus academic programs and initiatives,
providing leadership in the evaluation of resource needs to meet
programmatic and capital program goals, including the use of
technology-enhanced instructional tools and learning management systems.
This includes review, with the EVC, of administrative processes to
ensure they appropriately support the university’s academic priorities.
The Sr. AVC-AA will lead significant academic projects and initiatives
impacting multiple divisions within the General Campus or academic
divisions across campus.
In order to qualify for the position of Sr. AVC-AA, a candidate must
hold a tenured appointment in one of UC San Diego's academic units. The
Sr. AVC-AA will be appointed for a five-year term, renewable following
appropriate review. Percentage of time will be 100%.

Position Responsibilities and Qualifications:
RESPONSIBILITIES
Academic Personnel:
Serves as the principal advisor to the EVC on academic personnel
matters.
In consultation with the EVC, establishes priorities and strategies for
the office of Academic Personnel Services (APS), and coordinates their
implementation with the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic
Personnel.
Oversees and manages the Senate and non-Senate academic personnel
process with delegated approval authority for a range of actions and
titles.
In coordination with the Executive Vice Chancellor, is the liaison with
the Committee on Academic Personnel (CAP).
Assists and advises the Executive Vice Chancellor on allocation
decisions for faculty FTE resources for academic units.
Oversees academic compensation issues, including policies related to
equity, additional compensation, development of academic salary scales
and classification of academic positions.
Provides leadership in conflict resolution involving academic employees,
and advises the EVC on misconduct and grievance matters.
Academic Planning:
Provides leadership in overall campus academic planning and evaluates
resource issues related to proposals for new programs. Initiates, plans,
and proposes new policies to advance academic programs.
Assists and advises the Executive Vice Chancellor on the intersection
between administrative processes and the campus’ academic mission.
Oversees the implementation of new academic programs with the Dean of
Undergraduate Education and the Dean of the Graduate Division.
Co-leads campus reaccreditation process with the Dean of Undergraduate
Education
Serves as liaison with departments, programs, Academic Senate
committees, student governance committees, and UC San Diego
administrators, as well as with administrators at the Office of the
President, other universities both within and outside UC, and university
associations on academic planning matters.
Resource Management & Planning:
Provides leadership in the development and implementation of short- and
long-range financial plans for supporting General Campus programs and
activities.
Assists in the planning and budget process and advises the Executive
Vice Chancellor on faculty FTE allocations and other resource
allocations.
Provides leadership in the development of integrated and inclusive
multi-year plans for permanent faculty hiring.
Space and Capital Program:
Provides leadership in the planning and acquisition of resources to meet
short- and long-range capital program goals for the General Campus.
Oversees the management and utilization of General Campus space and the
campus's general assignable classrooms.
Chairs building advisory committees for General Campus projects that are
of a specialized nature or involve several or all academic divisions.
Instructional Technology:
Develops short- and long-range plans for technology-enhanced instruction
and the supporting infrastructure.
Fosters development of new instructional technology initiatives.
Coordinates instructional technology initiatives with Education
Technology Services, the University Library, Qualcomm Institute, and
other campus partners.
QUALIFICATIONS
*Tenured UC San Diego faculty member.
*Experience as a campus administrator.
*Experience with academic file preparation, reading/analysis.
*Ability to make sound judgment on academic personnel matters
(advancement, compensation, employee relations, etc.).
*Experience and interest in mentoring and developing faculty.
*Commitment to and success in establishing and achieving institutional
diversity and inclusion goals.
*Knowledge of academic program needs and relevant policies and
procedures for planning and analysis.
*Knowledge of education, building curricula and enhancing the student
experience.
*Familiarity with WASC requirements and processes.
*Knowledge of educational facility planning, space planning, space
utilization, and capital funding mechanisms.
*Experience in strategic planning, including development of planning
tools and guidelines, and oversight and documentation of the planning
process.
*Ability to credibly, reliably, effectively, and tactfully represent the
Executive Vice Chancellor to campus and external constituencies.
*Comprehensive knowledge of the policies, procedures, and governance of
UC San Diego and the University of California.
