SUBJECT:    New Presidential Policy on Export Control

The Office of the President has issued a new Presidential Policy on
Export Control that addresses the University of California’s compliance
with U.S. export control laws and regulations by all members of the
University community. Export controls are the laws and regulations that
to protect national security, economic interest and support foreign
policy.

University activities that may have export control implications include
collaborating with a foreign institution, person or entity, shipping or
hand-carrying equipment, items, samples or controlled data
internationally, receiving export controlled data or technology,
materials or research samples, agreements which include publication or
foreign national restrictions, foreign nationals’ access to export
controlled items or information, foreign financial transactions, and
transactions involving sanctioned countries such as Cuba, Iran, North
Korea, Sudan and Syria.

This new Policy affirms what UC San Diego already has in place to
address export control risks and facilitate the needs of our
researchers. The UC San Diego Export Control Office, which is part of
Research Compliance and Integrity in the Office of Research Affairs,
serves as a resource to the research community by providing guidance on
license requirements, obtaining the required licenses, providing,
assistance with technology control plan requirements and training.
Export control is a shared responsibility and UC San Diego is committed
to ensuring that University activities have the required export licenses
and controls in place to comply with federal export control regulations.
