SUBJECT:    Notice of VC Leinen’s Five-Year Review

Dear Colleagues:

In accordance with University and Regents policies requiring that
academic vice chancellors, who also are Senior Management Group (SMG)
members, be reviewed every five years, I am initiating a formal
five-year review of Margaret S. Leinen, Vice Chancellor for Marine
Sciences, Director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Dean of
the Graduate School of Marine Sciences.

In consultation with the Academic Senate, I have appointed a committee
to conduct a review of Vice Chancellor Leinen’s performance and to
provide to me a report of its findings. The review committee members
are:

Jeffrey S. Gee - Professor, Scripps Institution of Oceanography
(Committee Chair)
Jennifer Burney - Assistant Professor, Global Policy & Strategy
Ronald Burton - Professor, Scripps Institution of Oceanography
Elsa E. Cleland - Professor, Biological Sciences
William Gerwick - Professor, School of Pharmacy/Pharmaceutical Science
Sarah Giddings - Assistant Professor, Scripps Institution of
Oceanography
Sarah Gille - Professor, Scripps Institution of Oceanography
Peter M. Shearer - Professor, Scripps Institution of Oceanography

The charge to the committee is to evaluate VC Leinen’s performance in
the full spectrum of leadership responsibilities for UC San Diego Marine
Sciences, Director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Dean of
the Graduate School of Marine Sciences, including the following areas:
leadership ability, decision-making ability, administrative and
managerial skills, and representational ability. Some of the critical
features to be addressed in the review include VC Leinen’s leadership in
advancing the academic quality of Marine Sciences, Scripps Institution
of Oceanography and Graduate School of Marine Sciences, ensuring the
vitality of the school’s teaching and scholarship, supporting the
diversity of faculty, staff and students, fostering interdisciplinary
relations and expanding collaborative opportunities, and working with
external and professional communities.

In the coming weeks, the review committee will solicit comments on Vice
Chancellor Leinen’s performance and will strive to ensure the
confidentiality of all respondents. You will receive another email from
me on Monday, September 24 inviting you to complete a brief online
survey developed to assist with this review. Individuals wishing to
provide input may also contact Chair Gee at jsgee@ucsd.edu. All comments
are due by Friday, October 12. Thank you in advance for your input.
