ACADEMIC SENATE: SAN DIEGO DIVISION
October 29, 2019
MEMBERS OF THE ACADEMIC SENATE, SAN DIEGO DIVISION
SUBJECT: | UC San Diego Policy on Distance Education Courses – Effective November 1, 2019 |
Dear Colleagues,
At the October 15, 2019 meeting, the Educational Policy Committee (EPC)
reported to the Representative Assembly of the San Diego Divisional
Senate that EPC approved the UC San Diego Policy on Distance Education
Courses, effective November 1, 2019. This policy replaces the CEP Policy
on Remote and Distance Instruction. The new policy is available on the
Academic Senate’s website: https://go.ucsd.edu/2WmEKaw
The UC San Diego Policy on Distance Education Courses:
1. Provides a standard definition for distance education courses,
which refers to a mode of instruction in which some or all students are
separated from the instructor based on course design. A distance
education course must support regular and substantive interaction
between the students and the instructor, either synchronously (live but
remote) or asynchronously (on demand and remote).
2. Clearly defines the standards, proposal requirements, and review
procedures that apply to all new distance education courses.
3. Requires that all distance education courses, whether offered
synchronously or asynchronously, bear the letter R (for Remote) at the
end of the course code.
All proposals requesting to establish a new distance education course
submitted on or after November 1, 2019 are required to follow the UC San
Diego Policy on Distance Education Courses’ requirements. Questions
related to the policy and course proposals may be directed to Lori
Hullings, Senate Associate Director, at: lhullings@ucsd.edu
