CAMPUS NOTICE

OFFICE OF THE CHANCELLOR

November 1, 2019

ALL ACADEMICS, STAFF, AND STUDENTS AT UC SAN DIEGO

SUBJECT:    UC San Diego Statement: Condemning Incidents of Hate and Bias

Last night we received reports of a disturbing image outside of one of our campus apartment buildings. The image was particularly painful because it is symbolic of hate and racial intimidation toward African Americans. Our colleagues in Graduate and Family Housing responded immediately, and by the time they arrived, the image had already been removed.

Our colleagues in the Department of Housing, Dining and Hospitality issued a statement denouncing the incident and reported it to the Office for the Prevention of Harassment and Discrimination (OPHD). The incident is also being investigated by the UC San Diego Police Department.

We take this and any other reports of hate and bias very seriously and they will not be tolerated. We will hold the responsible individual or individuals accountable. At UC San Diego, we uphold each individual’s right to dignity, justice and respect and we are steadfast in our commitment to the Principles of Community. While the campus investigates further, we are taking action now by holding community conversations with students in the neighborhoods in which the incidents occurred.

We understand that this can affect everyone in different ways. If needed, we encourage you to seek support through one of the many campus resources including Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), (858) 534-3755 and the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (FSAP), (858) 534-5523.
