SUBJECT:    New Campus-Wide Office Waste Reduction Program

The University of California has a goal of achieving zero waste by 2020. To help our campus reach this goal, we are implementing a new campus-wide office waste reduction program.

Most offices and cubicles have a lined trash and recycling bin. In January, Facilities Management began replacing all office trash bins with a Bin Buddy, a miniature trash container that attaches inside or outside a blue recycling bin. As most office waste is actually recyclable, the Bin Buddy has been designed to accommodate the typical amount of non-recyclable waste generated by an individual on a weekly basis. When you recycle properly and reuse items, like coffee mugs and refillable water bottles, the Bin Buddy and blue office recycling bin are large enough to accommodate your recyclable and non-recyclable waste. By switching to mini waste bins and eliminating liners, we will increase recycling and reduce waste sent to landfills.

For details about using your Bin Buddy, please visit:

Please know that in making this change, Facilities Management will not be reducing the frequency of any of our service levels. Office trash and recycling will still be serviced on a weekly basis, and common area and restroom trash and recycling will still be serviced on a daily basis.

Custodians are working west across campus by college to replace bins. Facilities Management expects to complete this conversion by mid-2019.

If you have any questions, please call the Facilities Management Customer Relations Help Desk at (858) 534-2930. We appreciate your support as we work together to achieve our zero-waste goals.
