Dear Colleagues, In response to the evolution of technological tools and growing demand for online educational programs, UC San Diego has developed digital education environments designed to meet our unique instructional and learning needs. I am pleased to announce that moving forward, UC San Diego will deploy a custom Open edX content management system (CMS) to host the university’s new online course offerings. Open edX is more versatile than proprietary systems and benefits from the latest findings in learning sciences and instructional design contributed by its robust community of developers, technology partners, research teams, and users. UC San Diego will also be replacing our Triton Ed learning management system (LMS) with Canvas, a reliable cloud-based system that a growing number of top universities are using to support their faculty and students. The two systems will be integrated, meaning that global learners outside of the UC San Diego community (i.e., non-matriculated students) will be able to access UC San Diego online courses on Open edX while UC San Diego students will be able to access our online courses on Open edX via Canvas. Effective immediately, all new online courses and program development will be hosted on Open edX and Canvas. Existing online courses may remain on edX and Coursera, but no new courses will be added to either platform. For questions regarding developing online courses on either Canvas or Open edX, please contact the Digital Learning Hub in the Teaching + Learning Commons at online@ucsd.edu.
