ALL ACADEMICS, STAFF AND STUDENTS AT UC SAN DIEGO
SUBJECT: | Updates on Seventh College Planning and Appointment of Interim Provost |
We are pleased to update the campus community on progress toward the
establishment of UC San Diego’s Seventh College, which is scheduled to
enroll its first cohort of students in Fall 2020, and will be located in
remodeled space in The Village.
The UC Board of Regents approved the proposal to establish Seventh
College in May, as a part of UC San Diego’s broader plan to
strategically manage current and future undergraduate enrollment growth
in a way that ensures student success. The academic plan for Seventh
College was approved by the San Diego Division of the Academic Senate in
June. We would like to thank all who participated in the Seventh College
Academic Planning Town Hall meetings for their valuable contributions to
this process. We also appreciate the Seventh College Planning
Committee’s efforts in developing an innovative general education
curriculum centered on the theme of “A Changing Planet.”
We are also glad to be able to inform the community that Professor Kate
Antonovics has agreed to serve as Interim Provost of Seventh College,
effective September 1, 2019 and will provide oversight for the initial
college staffing and start-up. Professor Antonovics is an Associate
Teaching Professor in the Department of Economics. She has been serving
as Acting Provost of Revelle College since Fall 2018 and will conclude
her service in that role on August 31, 2019.
The important work of staffing Seventh College will begin this Summer,
with searches for the deans of academic advising and student affairs.
The search for Seventh College’s inaugural Provost will be conducted
this Fall.
We look forward to seeing our newest college join its fellows in
providing our students with interdisciplinary general education and the
experience of a residential learning community.
