SUBJECT:    Campaign for UC San Diego Achieves $2 Billion Milestone

Seven years ago, we set an ambitious goal to raise $2 billion in order
to transform the university physically, intellectually and culturally to
become a student-centered, research-focused, service-oriented public
university. Together with our university and volunteer leaders, academic
partners, and many others, we not only met our goal, but exceeded it—in
only 70 percent of the time.

As of July 24, 2019, we raised $2.04 billion through donations from
135,367 unique donors with gifts ranging from $10 to more than $100
million.

The campus community has been integral in helping us reach this
milestone. In May 2019, faculty, staff and students enthusiastically
participated in u.give—UC San Diego’s first Giving Day—raising $662,156
from 3,523 gifts of all sizes.

Thank you to all the faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends who
have created a powerful community that is driving fundraising momentum
and propelling us to continue our efforts to the conclusion of the
Campaign in 2022.

The Campaign for UC San Diego is already transforming the university.
More than 430 unique areas on campus have been impacted through campaign
gifts. Of the total gifts, 45% were designated by donors to fund student
support and success; 37% to enrich our campus and community; 17% for
research and innovation; and 1% to support other areas.

In seven years, we have expanded college access and affordability for
underserved students, initiated campuswide interdisciplinary research
initiatives to foster collaboration and solve societal challenges, and
strengthened university and community partnerships to drive regional
impact.

With three years to go in the Campaign, we will continue to create a
culture of philanthropy that will serve this university in perpetuity.
We will push boundaries in our quest to become a preferred destination
for students, patients and the community.

In keeping with our nontraditional spirit, we’ve crossed into uncharted
territory: UC San Diego is the youngest university in the country to
reach a multi-billion-dollar milestone in a single campaign. We have
accomplished something no one else has done before. Only here. Nowhere
else.

Thank you for helping us achieve this unprecedented success. I look
forward to seeing what we can achieve by the conclusion of the Campaign
in 2022.
