We are pleased to invite nominations and applications for the new position of Associate Vice Chancellor for Innovation in Education (AVC-IE). We have enlisted the assistance of the Witt/Kieffer executive search firm to help us manage this national search. Dennis Trinidad, Associate Professor of Family Medicine and Public Health, has agreed to chair the Search Advisory Committee (membership listed below). The AVC-IE will provide strategic leadership to creatively advance education at UC San Diego, to provide an equitable, high-quality educational experience for all students. Under the direction of the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the AVC-IE will lead the Strategic Academic Program Development Initiative, designed to stimulate the creation of new academic programs and related infrastructure to meet campus priorities for access, academic success, enhanced reputational standing and/or new revenue generation. The AVC-IE will also supervise and partner with the Faculty Director of The Teaching + Learning Commons, which promotes educational excellence through instructional development for educators and student academic support. In addition to oversight of these two distinct programmatic areas, the AVC-IE will play an institutional role by collaborating with University leadership, deans, college provosts, faculty, the Academic Senate and staff to co-create a culture of innovation in education that will shape future generations of responsible, compassionate, global citizens. In this role, the AVC-IE will convene individuals, teams and groups; drive conversations across the University; ensure follow through and execution of new ideas; seek to align existing programs; and promote the sharing of best practices around retention and student success. Likewise, the AVC-IE will champion the development of digital strategies and introduction of new technologies to enhance educational excellence. Paramount to this endeavor will be a highly inclusive approach that ensures equitable benefit for all students to close achievement gaps and foster learning beyond graduation. The AVC-IE position is a full-time, 12-month administrative appointment accompanied by a full-time tenured (ladder rank series) or security-of-employment (teaching professor series) appointment as professor or associate professor. PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE AVC-IE POSITION: • A demonstrated record of scholarship, publications or creative works, and teaching that merits a tenured (ladder rank series) or security-of-employment (teaching professor series) faculty appointment as an associate or full professor at UC San Diego; • Demonstrated knowledge of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL), faculty culture and disciplinary approaches to instruction and relevant campus policies to ensure proper alignment of faculty development programs and services with institutional needs and evidence- based teaching practices; • Demonstrated experience with innovative pedagogical methods, including digital learning strategies and assessment; • A desire to lead in a team-based, matrix organization; • Experience in a leadership position focused on teaching and learning; • Experience with administrative, budgetary, human resources, academic personnel and financial resources and accountability for same; • Intimate experience with and understanding of the academic culture of a research university, and the ways in which this position can enhance a teaching culture within a research university and make the connections between teaching and research; • Demonstrated expertise building collaborations between academia, industrial and/or governmental agencies including grant, and revenue generation experience; • Experience building effective community partnerships (e.g., with K-12 and community colleges) that promote an ethos of shared responsibility for developing the pipeline; • Demonstrated ability to manage diverse stakeholders in a consensus-driven culture and align on strategic plans for digital learning – and experience successfully delivering on those plans; • Use of technology for data collection, analysis and informed decision-making to promote academic achievement; • Experience designing, creating, planning, and managing a professional development and training program that supports both residential and online learning; • Ability to lead institutional change; • Ability to foster a culture grounded in integrity and ethical behavior; • A commitment to enhance the inclusivity and equity of the campus teaching and learning environment; • Demonstrated political skills to develop and maintain professional relationships and work collaboratively with campus leadership, department chairs, school/divisional deans, college provosts and faculty at all ranks as well as other directors and managers in academic partner units, and community partners; • Ability to relate to faculty with diverse experiences and technical capabilities; • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment; • Excellent analytical, written, interpersonal, communication, consultation and presentation skills; • Computer literacy and digital citizenship skills.
