Project Purpose
The East Voigt Improvements Project encompasses the widening of Voigt Drive, improvements to the Voigt Bridge and a realignment of Campus Point Drive. The project will expand transportation capacity in this corridor to better accommodate the existing and future traffic demand, particularly for peak-period commuting, and aligns with the opening of the UC San Diego Blue Line Trolley extension, which will provide more direct access to the campus and medical centers from the Voigt Drive Trolley station.
Location and Duration
The next phase of work is scheduled to begin on October 19, which will require a full closure of the Voigt Drive bridge to both vehicles and pedestrians for approximately five months, and will also shift the existing southbound/inbound Campus Point Drive traffic onto the new roadway alignment. Road closures are necessary to expedite project work, lessen the overall impact and ensure public safety.
Immediate Parking Lot, Street Traffic, and Pedestrian Impacts
- Access to the UC San Diego Medical Center and Emergency Department from Genesee Ave. will remain available at all times, as will parking lots and parking structures throughout the east campus.
- When the Voigt Drive bridge is closed, Voigt Drive to the east will be reopened and vehicular access to parking lot P701, Triton Baseball Field, The Preuss School and the UCSD Substation will be maintained at all times via Genesee Ave. and Voigt Drive from the east.
- Pedestrian and micromobility access to P701 and the Triton Baseball Field will be maintained at all times via Voigt Drive from the east only.
- The southbound traffic on Campus Point Drive will be shifted from the current/existing roadway to the final alignment. During this shift, Campus Point Drive will remain open to vehicles for inbound traffic only. Outbound traffic on Campus Point Drive will remain prohibited during this phase.
