Updates from your CHRO

Dear Colleagues,

Last week I was pleased to announce Zoom-Free Friday Afternoons, our innovative new approach to supporting staff who are working remotely. Whenever possible, I encourage you to avoid scheduling regular, administrative meetings on Fridays after 12 p.m. so that you can spend that time on focused, individual work, ending the week with a sense of accomplishment.

This week, we’ll begin sharing the results of the 2020 Staff@Work Survey. This year we asked a new set of questions about your experience as a staff member during the COVID-19 pandemic. Your answers to these questions continue to be important as we gain insight into how to foster an engaging, vibrant employee experience.

As we take this Wednesday, November 11th off work for Veterans Day, I invite you to join me in recognizing and honoring the many veterans who have served our country.

Read on to learn more about what’s happening in our campus community.

Asymptomatic COVID Testing for You: All faculty, staff and student employees are strongly encouraged to schedule a voluntary, no-cost asymptomatic COVID-19 test every 12-16 days. Safe Travel Planning: We’d like to share with you again important safety guidelines as we approach the upcoming holiday seasons. We anticipate that many of us will be travelling to share time with family and friends. Please remember that if you plan to travel, it is critical to plan your trip carefully. Review the guidelines on the Return to Learn site. Help keep yourselves, your loved ones and our entire community safe.

$65 Asymptomatic COVID-19 Testing for Your Family:
Many of you have asked about asymptomatic test availability for your family. We are pleased to share that UC San Diego Health has developed an option for low cost asymptomatic testing for the community. This testing is available at any of our five drive-up locations. Results are provided usually within 24 hours. The goal is to help increase screening in the community as well as to provide testing for various purposes such as school or travel needs. Addressing Anti-Blackness: How to Sustain a Culture of Inclusion, Equity, and Anti-Racism at UC San Diego

The UC San Diego Staff Association and the UC San Diego Black Staff Association invite you to participate in a series of webinars over the next four weeks with best-selling author and activist Shola Richards, whose work you may have experienced through his prior impactful engagements with our community. This is a tremendous opportunity to reconnect or connect for the first time.

The Addressing Anti-Blackness series will equip participants with a deeper understanding of systemic racism and its impact on the modern-day workplace; strategies to recognize and address bias, prejudice and microaggressions in the workplace; and the tools to stay committed to the ongoing work of anti-racism.

Staff Resource Spotlight

Retirement Counseling and Workshops: One of the many valuable benefits of working at UC San Diego is access to one-on-one retirement counseling with representatives from Fidelity. Our Fidelity partners have deep knowledge about UC-specific retirement funds, and they can also offer general advice about non-UC accounts. To schedule a Zoom appointment, contact Ron Appling.

Warmly,

Nancy
