Celebrating UC San Diego's 60th Birthday
From the birth of our experimental campus in 1960, we committed to exploration and discovery outside the norm. We brought together explorers, changemakers, and brilliant artistic minds and encouraged collaboration to solve societal challenges and drive progress. In a year like no other, UC San Diego’s academic and healthcare communities continued to demonstrate the pioneering and innovative Triton spirit that has propelled this university and academic medical center faster and further than any other in the world. 

This year was no exception. We continued to shine despite the challenges we faced together. Our hospital was the first in San Diego to treat COVID-19. Our researchers immediately dove into understanding how to stop its transmission and how to treat it. And we were the first university in the nation to announce plans to bring students and researchers back to campus. 

And the world continues to take notice. For the fourth year in a row, Times Higher Education ranked UC San Diego first among the world’s top “Golden Age” universities—the best higher education institutions that were founded between 1945 and 1966. For 10 of the past 11 years, UC San Diego was named the #1 public university in the country for contributions to social mobility, research and public service by Washington Monthly. U.S. News & World Report once again ranked UC San Diego the nation’s sixth best public university. And this academic year, for the first time in our history, UC San Diego’s enrollment surpassed 40,000 students.

I am pleased to kick off our 60th Anniversary Year. UC San Diego has been “ahead of tomorrow” for 60 years now, and I don’t see that changing any time soon. I hope you will join me throughout the year in celebrating UC San Diego’s 60th birthday.
