Dear Colleagues,
With sharp increases of COVID-19 cases in San Diego County and across the country, the safest way to spend the upcoming holiday weekend is at home with members of your immediate household. It’s more important than ever that we all take precautions to keep ourselves, our loved ones and our communities safe.
However, if you do plan to travel during the holiday season, it’s critical to plan your trip carefully and take steps to avoid virus transmission. You can find guidelines and resources for university travelers on the Return to Learn website. I encourage you to review this information carefully and to be mindful of travel advisories that may impact your trip.
Read on to learn more about ways to stay safe and healthy, and to find out what else is happening in our campus community.
Health and Safety Updates
State-Mandated Curfew: On Saturday, a new limited stay-at-home order, issued by the California governor, went into effect for all counties in the purple tier (including San Diego County). The order prohibits all indoor social gatherings and non-essential activities outside the home from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Asymptomatic COVID-19 Testing: All faculty, staff and student employees continue to be eligible for voluntary, no-cost asymptomatic COVID-19 testing at a number of UC San Diego Health sites throughout San Diego County. We are increasing the frequency of available testing and are able to provide weekly asymptomatic testing for all staff beginning November 30, 2020. With the significant increase in viral activity in our region, we strongly encourage you to take advantage of this benefit and get tested regularly. Schedule your asymptomatic test »
CA COVID Notify: Have you added the CA COVID Notify app to your phone yet? Using Google and Apple technology, CA COVID Notify can quickly notify you if you’ve likely been exposed to COVID-19, allowing you to seek medical attention and reduce risk for your friends, family and the Triton community without compromising your privacy. Get instructions for activating the tool on your phone »
UC Flu Vaccine Mandate: As of November 16, 2020, students, faculty and staff must attest that they have received a flu vaccine or an approved medical exemption or disability or religious accommodation before coming to campus or any other physical UC San Diego worksite for any purpose or duration. Learn more and submit your flu vaccine attestation »
Paid COVID-19 Leave Periods Extended: As Chancellor Khosla announced last week, the time within which employees can use the one-time allotment of 128 hours of UC Paid Administrative Leave has been extended to June 30, 2021. Similarly, in support of UC San Diego employees, the Chancellor has authorized an extension of the time within which employees can use the one-time grant of 80 hours of the Chancellor's Supplemental Leave to June 30, 2021. This weekend is traditionally a time during which many of us would gather in celebration with family and friends. While this year may be different from usual, I hope the long weekend is restful for all of us and an opportunity to share connection virtually or otherwise with our loved ones.
This is also a time to reflect on the things we’re grateful for in our lives. I want to express how thankful I am to be a member of the UC San Diego community. I am inspired every day by the strength, resilience and creativity I see across campus. I want to express my thanks to each of you. As staff at UC San Diego, your contributions provide the foundation our institution’s success and innovation.
I look forward to continuing our work together as we close out 2020 and look ahead to the year to come.
Warmly,
