UC San Diego will observe World AIDS Day on Tuesday, December 1, 2020, to focus attention on and raise awareness about the impact that HIV/AIDS has had and continues to have in the San Diego community, the nation and the world. Our campus sponsors a number of opportunities in recognition of World AIDS Day, including a virtual display of eight sections of the AIDS Memorial Quilt. UC San Diego Health is also home to the world-renowned Owen Clinic, the most comprehensive care center in San Diego for individuals living with HIV.
From 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. PST on Tuesday, December 1, we invite you to join us for World AIDS Day 2020 — A National Conversation, with Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and Dr. David D. Ho, Director of the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center at Columbia University, as the keynote speakers. 2020 marks 40 years since the first cases of AIDS were reported in the United States, a pandemic that has led to nearly 700,000 lives lost and still no cure four decades later. This year, our nation struggles through another pandemic — the fight against COVID-19 — the tragic loss of life has surpassed 220,000 in a matter of months. The program will spotlight the interconnectedness of both pandemics — the lives lost, the survivors, the activism and the heroes. Through a distinguished list of guest speakers, video storytelling, and musical tributes, the program will explore how a nation confronts, responds and heals, as well as the lessons that must be learned for the future. The forum will be presented free on YouTube.
Throughout the day, we encourage you to explore the AIDS Memorial Quilt online as well as the curated pieces for UC San Diego. The AIDS Memorial Quilt is the premiere symbol of the AIDS pandemic, a living memorial to a generation lost to AIDS and an important HIV prevention education tool. With hundreds of thousands of people contributing their talents to making the memorial panels, and tens of thousands of volunteers to help display it, the Quilt is considered the largest community arts project in history.
