Reminders Regarding Pandemic Safety In Research Facilities

Academics, staff, and students across the University have done an admirable job of observing safety protocols while continuing exemplary research, scholarship, and creative activity. We are deeply appreciative of the dedication you have shown to balancing safety with ongoing research, training, and education of UC San Diego students.
As you are aware, San Diego County is now in the “purple” tier because transmission is widespread. Currently approved on-site research, scholarship, or creative activity can continue.
The Governor’s Limited Stay at Home Order restricts certain activities. All faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to limit their on-site activity as much as possible during the 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. hours. Those whose approved research requires on-site activity during these hours are considered essential, and may continue their on-site research.
For those of you coming on campus to engage in research activities at any time, please:
  • Wear a face covering at all times;
  • Complete the UCSD symptom/exposure screening tool each day before coming to campus;
  • Maintain a 6-foot distance from others whenever possible;
  • Take advantage of UC San Diego’s support for asymptomatic COVID-19 testing by completing a voluntary, no-cost COVID-19 test (as of November 30th, these tests will be available to all academics and staff weekly);
  • Wash your hands frequently, for 20 seconds;
  • Sanitize workspaces after each use;
  • Add the CA COVID Notify app to your phone;
  • Isolate after testing positive for COVID-19. Those who test positive for COVID-19 should not return to work on-site until they have been cleared by a medical provider.
  • If you test positive at a non-UCSD Health location, report your test results to UC San Diego at COEMexposure@health.ucsd.edu to support contact tracing efforts.
  • When notified that you have been exposed to someone who tests positive for COVID-19, quarantine for 14 days.
UC San Diego students, academics, and staff are required to quarantine after exposure, and may not return to on-site research for 14 days after exposure. Health System employees working at health facilities should follow the UC San Diego Health System Employee Testing, Exposure, and Return-to-Work Guidelines for quarantine and testing protocols.
As scholars and scientists, you know how critical frequent testing, symptom checking, awareness, and education are in keeping our campus and you healthy. We ask you not only to do your part by following campus guidance, but also to encourage your peers and colleagues to do the same.
If you have any concerns about inattention to safety requirements, please notify eoc@ucsd.edu, EH&S ((858) 534-3660) or the UC Whistleblower hotline ((800) 403-4744).
