UC San Diego to Continue Championing Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Despite Rejection of Prop 16
We are disappointed that Proposition 16 was rejected by voters this election. The passage of Prop 16 would have helped reverse the detrimental and far-reaching Proposition 209 (1996) that banned the consideration of race, ethnicity and gender in admissions. Despite this setback, UC San Diego’s strong commitment to increasing diversity and equity within our student body, faculty and staff will continue.
Over the past five years, we have made strides in increasing equity, diversity and inclusion. We will continue to make progress across all parts of our community, guided by our campus-level Strategic Plan, our Strategic Plan for Inclusive Excellence, and other programs specifically designed to expand and promote diverse representation, participation, attainment and leadership within our student body, faculty and staff.
UC San Diego’s progress in creating an inclusive campus is presented in a series of interactive dashboards on the Accountability webpage on our Diversity web site. These display detailed data on key indicators such as recruitment, retention and advancement. While we have built new infrastructure and made notable advancements, it is important to acknowledge we will need to continue to make steady progress on a consistent basis.
We have taken bold actions in creating our equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) initiatives and programs to ensure that our EDI goals are a part of everything we do. We will continue to actively track our efforts in order to cultivate and sustain a learning and working environment at UC San Diego that is diverse, equitable and inclusive, where everyone in our community can thrive.
