SUBJECT: | CONSTRUCTION ALERT – East Voigt Drive Improvements Project–Campus Point Drive Northbound Lanes Closure |
Project Location/Description:
UC San Diego has been involved with several important regional
transportation projects to improve traffic circulation and access for
all UC San Diego stakeholders including visitors, patients, and the
local community.
In partnership with Caltrans, as part of the North Coast Corridor (NCC)
Project, the East Voigt Improvements Project encompasses the widening of
Voigt Drive, improvements to the Voigt Bridge, and a realignment of
Campus Point Drive. Starting as early as Monday, June 1, 2020, this
next phase requires the northbound lanes of Campus Point Drive to be
closed for approximately 14-18 months to facilitate construction
activities for the East Voigt Drive Improvements Project. There will be
no change to incoming southbound traffic. All pedestrian traffic along
Campus Point Drive will be detoured to Regents Road, Health Sciences
Drive, and Medical Center Drive. These road and sidewalk closures are
necessary to expedite project work, lessen the overall impact, and
ensure public safety.
The project will expand transportation capacity in this corridor to
better accommodate existing and future traffic demand, particularly for
peak-period commuting; provide more direct access from the Voigt Drive
Trolley station, especially for those visiting local medical centers,
schools, businesses, and other nearby facilities; and bring underground
utility improvements to the campus, a bicycle lane along Voigt Drive,
and new sidewalks.
The improvements are anticipated to be complete by the end of 2021,
which aligns with the opening of the UC San Diego Blue Line Trolley
extension.
Immediate Parking Lot, Street Traffic, and Pedestrian Impacts:
The first phase of the East Voigt Drive Improvements project began on
April 20, 2020, with a full closure of Voigt Drive between Campus Point
Drive and parking lot P701. As stated above, the northbound lanes of
Campus Point Drive will be closed for approximately 14-18 months
starting as early as Monday, June 1, 2020. During this time, northbound
vehicles, pedestrians, and all forms of micro-mobility will be detoured
to use Medical Center Drive, Health Sciences Drive, and Regents Road to
access Genesee Avenue when exiting the UC San Diego Medical Center.
Additionally, northbound Campus Point Drive detouring traffic can also
access La Jolla Village drive via Regents Road. All pedestrian traffic
in both directions on Campus Point Drive will be detoured to Genesee
Avenue, Regents Road, Health Sciences Drive, and Medical Center Drive.
Affected MTS transit services have been re-routed with related changes
in transit stops. Please observe all temporary traffic controls, crew
member instructions, and reduce speeds and exercise caution when
traveling near work crews. Temporary traffic signals are being installed
on Health Sciences Drive to help reduce traffic congestion for outbound
traffic.
Southbound lanes of Campus Point Drive will remain open to vehicular
traffic and bicycles. Access to the UC San Diego Medical Center and
Emergency Department via Campus Point Drive from Genesee Ave. will
remain available at all times, as will parking lots and parking
structures on UC San Diego’s La Jolla Medical Center campus.
We are monitoring the impact of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and will
address the needs of our medical centers as they are identified, with
the priority being the health and safety of our patients, students,
faculty, and staff.
We greatly appreciate your patience as we work with our agency partners
to facilitate these access, circulation, and infrastructure
improvements.
