ALL ACADEMICS AND STAFF AT UC SAN DIEGO

SUBJECT:    Temporary Layoffs in Housing, Dining and Hospitality

Dear Colleagues,

The UC San Diego campus remains greatly affected by the coronavirus pandemic. Our Housing, Dining and Hospitality Division experienced an 85 percent reduction in our undergraduate housing for the 2020 spring quarter, and a 90 percent cancellation in summer programs. As a response, we implemented numerous cost-saving measures, including hiring freezes and project deferments. However, due to a substantial decrease or absence of summer duties, we had to make the very difficult decision of placing some of our staff members on temporary layoff for the summer months.

These summer layoffs are not a typical business practice at UC San Diego. We kept them to a minimum, below the three-four month period limit that UC pays its portion for staff continued health and benefit coverage. Our HR teams have been providing support that includes access to employment insurance and other programs that will limit the financial impact to our employees.

We expect our staff back in September. They remain part of the UC San Diego community and of the HDH family. Thank you to those who expressed support. I am also grateful for the help of our HR teams through these difficult times.
