We are pleased to announce that after an extensive global search, Christa Perkins has been appointed as the Director for Audit & Management Advisory Services (AMAS) effective June 8, 2020. As Director of AMAS, Perkins will provide leadership and will be accountable for a full scope internal audit function for UC San Diego and UC San Diego Health. She will serve as a senior advisor to leadership and will oversee a unit charged with assessing and making appropriate recommendations for improving the campus and health sciences governance processes through promoting appropriate ethics and values within the organization, ensuring effective organizational performance and accountability, communicating risk and control information to appropriate areas of the organization, and coordinating the activities and communicating information among external and internal auditors and management. Perkins has worked for UC San Diego for over seventeen years, most recently as the Interim Director of AMAS. Over the past decade, she has held multiple leadership roles within AMAS, including leading every aspect of the internal audit function (audits, advisory services, investigations, and external audit coordination). She has experience leading reviews of functions across the University environment, including general campus operations, the research enterprise, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and the Health System. In addition, she has successfully represented the University in external reviews conducted by federal and state government agencies, and collaborated in numerous systemwide initiatives in support of the strategic goals of the systemwide audit program. Perkins’ extensive experience with all aspects of UC San Diego’s complex internal audit landscape will enable her to lead AMAS and partner with all areas of UC San Diego and UC San Diego Health to meet the challenges and goals of the organization. Prior to joining UC San Diego, Perkins was a consultant for KPMG Consulting, specializing in providing business consulting services to state and local government agencies in San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles, and Sacramento. Perkins received her a Bachelor of Arts in Sports Science with a Minor in Business Administration from the University of the Pacific. She received her Master of Business Administration from the University of San Diego. Perkins has acquired and maintained the following Internal Audit related certifications: Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), Certified in Healthcare Compliance (CHC), and Certified Healthcare Internal Audit Professional (CHIAP). The mission of AMAS is to assess and monitor the university community in the discharge of its oversight, management, and operating responsibilities in relation to governance processes, the systems of internal control, and compliance with laws, regulations and University policies including those related to ethical conduct by providing relevant, timely, independent, and objective assurance, advisory and investigative services using a systematic, disciplined approach to evaluate risk and improve effectiveness. AMAS is responsible for performing financial, operational, compliance, and information systems audits and investigations of the main campus, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and the Health Sciences Enterprise, including the School of Medicine, the Skaggs School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and UCSD's teaching hospitals.
