Born Free: Healing and Transcending Racism, presented by the Black Staff Association
The senseless murder of George Floyd at the hands of police, among countless other acts of violence against Black people, sparked a global conversation about the racial inequities and injustices that are embedded in the history and fabric of our nation. As a campus community, we must stand together against racism and be active participants in anti-racism work. Our willingness to engage in open and honest dialogue about challenging issues of race, power and privilege is more vital than ever.
To help provide context to and healing around these issues, the UC San Diego Black Staff Association (BSA) is hosting Born Free: Healing and Transcending Racism. This four-part workshop series is facilitated by Professor Starla Lewis, poet, author, life coach, and founder of Celebration of Everlasting Love and Life (C.E.L.L.).
All UC San Diego staff, faculty and administrators are welcome and encouraged to attend. Attendance at the workshops is considered compensable work time. Details of the next two sessions are as follows:
Healing & Education: I Am my own Self Validation A workshop exploring the power of words Thursday, July 30 | 2:30 – 4 p.m.
Healing & Education: Freeing the Spirit of Racism A workshop exploring how to transcend racism Wednesday, August 5 | 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Human Resources is proud to support the Black Staff Association in this important work. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the members of the BSA for their vision, leadership and dedication in coordinating this timely and important workshop series.
