Updates from your CHRO: Staying Informed and Connected

Dear Colleagues,
As your Chief Human Resources Officer I’m committed to keeping you informed through regular communications. Planning is under way for our next Staff Town Hall on Thursday, August 27, so keep an eye out for more details to come. Today, I want to highlight some important information and resources for our Campus staff.
Conversation and Connection
In this season of social distancing, we must be intentional about checking in with each other and having meaningful conversations. Here are some opportunities to grow, learn and contribute to a strong campus community by engaging in conversation.
Building Your Skills
  • Hard Times, Soft Skills: This 90-minute online workshop invites Campus staff to sample several mindful approaches to managing stress during this difficult time of social distancing, political uncertainty and economic turbulence. The next session is on Friday, August 14 from 9 – 10:30 a.m. Register through the UC Learning Center »
  • Career Connection: An offering of Campus Human Resources, Career Connection supports UC San Diego employees with career planning, goal setting, job enhancement and lateral or upward mobility. Learn more »
  • Managing Remote Teams: The first installment of the new Managing in Modern Times training series, this interactive learning session is designed to help UC San Diego managers and supervisors adapt their supervisory toolkit to remote work, a landscape of rapid change, and the ongoing challenges of life in a pandemic. If you’re interested in learning more about managing remote teams, join us on Thursday, August 20 from 1 – 3:30 p.m. Register through the UC Learning Center »
Staying Connected
Our strong and supportive connections to each other as a staff community have never been more important. Here are a few upcoming opportunities to come together:
  • Staff Summer Celebration
    • The theme of this year’s virtual Staff Summer Celebration is Triton Staff Strong and I can’t think of a better theme that represents our dedicated and resilient community of UC San Diego staff. Kudos to the Staff Association for their creativity in bringing this treasured campus tradition online.
    • The celebration takes place over three days (August 18-20) and offers a range of events to bring staff together, including trivia, a craft tutorial and opportunities to learn more about our affiliate groups.
    • Register and sign up for activities »
  • Cabinet Conversations
    • Another way you can stay connected is by attending Cabinet Conversations, a new partnership between the Staff Association and Campus Human Resources.
    • These biweekly events are designed to help staff get to know our campus leaders. View the videos from the past events »
    • Save the date for the next Cabinet Conversation on Tuesday, August 25 with Alysson Satterlund, Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs.
Performance Conversations
As we look ahead to performance evaluations this fall, it’s important to recognize that many of the goals and expectations set during the last performance evaluation cycle may have shifted significantly. Human Resources is developing tools, including this conversation guide, to help managers conduct thoughtful and supportive performance evaluation conversations.
21-Day Anti-Racism Challenge
The Chancellor’s 21-Day Anti-Racism Challenge is a powerful and necessary opportunity to deepen our understanding of race, power, privilege, supremacy and oppression. My hope is that throughout the challenge and after it concludes, staff will feel empowered to take action and continue the conversation about racism, and specifically anti-Black racism, in their personal and professional lives. If you haven’t registered already, it’s not too late to join the challenge. Register today »
As always, Campus Human Resources is here for you and we stand ready to support you and answer your questions. I am grateful for your continued dedication and hard work, and I am proud to be your colleague.
