CONSTRUCTION ALERT – Amphitheater & Public Realm Project: Visual Arts Building Impacts
Project Location/Description:
The Amphitheater and Public Realm Project will be located in Pepper Canyon, just south of the existing Structural and Materials Engineering Building and just northwest of the future Pepper Canyon Light Rail Trolley Station. The project will deliver a 3000-seat outdoor amphitheater in the heart of the Pepper Canyon Neighborhood and improve the surrounding area. This will include the construction of Rupertus Walk, which will tie the future Pepper Canyon Light Rail Trolley Station to the greater UC San Diego Campus. Rupertus Walk will greet pedestrians entering the campus with a Stuart Artwork Collection piece that will be embedded in the walkway. The project gross square footage is approximately 92,000 square feet and is expected to be complete in the Spring of 2022.
Immediate Street Traffic and Pedestrian Impacts:
The project will begin construction August 31, 2020 and expand upon the current construction boundary of the Design and Innovation Building Project. The expansion will extend the current project boundary west and encroach on the Visual Arts Facility. Buildings 4, 5, and predominantly 6 will be impacted. Additionally, the construction fence will expand west on the north and south sides of the Visual Arts Facility. A new construction entrance will be established on the pedestrian walkway just south of the Visual Arts Facility, north of Pepper Canyon Hall. Construction vehicles will continue to access the site from Russell Lane and Lyman Lane on the north side of the Visual Arts Building as the main entrance. Coordination with Visual Arts is underway to ensure the facility’s access and operational needs are addressed. For the duration of the project, a construction trailer and parking area will be established directly north of University Center Building 409.
Please be aware of your surroundings near construction areas, obey the direction of signage and construction flaggers, and note the posted pedestrian detour signage.
