CONSTRUCTION ALERT – Scripps Institution of Oceanography: Scripps Ocean-Atmosphere Research Simulator (SOARS)
Project Location/Description:
Located on the campus of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the project will include construction of a new instrument inside the Hydraulics Laboratory (HLab). The project is located off of La Jolla Shores Drive, on Biological Grade at the northwest portion of the Scripps Institution campus. Construction on SOARS begins August 3, 2020 with completion by Spring 2021.
The Scripps Ocean-Atmosphere Research Simulator (SOARS) will enable laboratory-scale simulations of the ocean-atmosphere boundary, reproducing the complex and interacting systems of wind, waves, and microbial processes. SOARS will consist of a 36 m long, 2.4 m x 2.4 m seawater channel and a recirculating atmosphere system to mimic ocean waves and create winds up to gale force conditions. Thermal controls on the seawater and air will enable simulation of tropical to polar conditions, including ice-ocean interactions.
Immediate Parking Lot, Street Traffic, and Pedestrian Impacts:
The existing Hydraulics Laboratory service yard will be closed for the duration of construction and the perimeter of the job site will be enclosed by chain-link fence with screen. La Jolla Shores Drive, Biological Grade, and all sidewalks, will remain open throughout the construction. Vehicular traffic can expect intermittent delays due to construction traffic entering and exiting the job site, however flaggers will be present to safely direct the flow of traffic. Please proceed with caution, reduce speeds, and allow additional time when traveling in this area.
