Dear Colleagues,
While this year has certainly presented new challenges for us all, it has also brought out the very best in our campus community. I continue to be inspired by the creativity and resilience I see in UC San Diego staff. In the past six months, we’ve truly revolutionized the way we work together and the way we serve our students. We’ve dreamed up incredible virtual events, creatively shifted many services online, reimagined the campus living and learning experience for our students, and so much more.
So before I share a few important updates for staff, I want to say thank you for all you are doing to keep UC San Diego moving forward. I am proud to be your colleague.
Empowering and Supporting UC San Diego Staff
Home Office Support for Staff Working Remotely: As many UC San Diego staff continue to work remotely, it’s important to have a suitable home workspace. Supervisors should consider the range of options available to support employees during this extended period of remote work, including bringing home items from the office, exploring our Surplus inventory, and more. COVID-19 Leave Protections for Staff: As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, I encourage you to review the different types of COVID-19 leave provisions afforded to you as a UC staff member. UC San Diego staff are eligible for not only the leave provisions offered through the University of California and through the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, but also for Chancellor Supplemental Leave, which is unique to our campus.
We recognize that staff working on-site are particularly likely to benefit from Chancellor Supplemental Leave, which is a testament to the critical importance of this additional provision. I’d like to express my gratitude to Chancellor Khosla for his leadership in securing this supplemental leave protection for UC San Diego staff.
Emergency Resources from UC’s Benefits Plans: If you have been impacted by the wildfires in our region, be sure to familiarize yourself with the emergency resources available through UC’s benefits plans. Resources include accessing your retirement savings for emergency expenses, replacing lost prescriptions, legal resources to help you recover, and more. Learn more about emergency resources »
Connection and Community
Staff Town Hall: I’m hosting our third Staff Town Hall next week on Thursday, September 24 at 3 p.m. If you’ve got a question for campus leaders, I encourage you to submit it when you register. Your questions are vital in helping us understand what’s on the minds of staff so we can stay in communication and provide relevant updates. Register and submit your questions »
Staff Association Social Sessions: Looking for a fun way to stay connected with your colleagues? By popular demand, the UC San Diego Staff Association is bringing back Social Sessions. This is a great opportunity to socialize, be entertained, get inspired, get moving and more. The next Social Session is a craft demo on Wednesday, September 23 from 12 – 1 p.m. Sign up and get more details »
National Disability Employment Awareness Month: I’m pleased to announce an exciting event I am hosting for National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Save the date on Tuesday, October 13 from 12 – 1 p.m. for a panel discussion of the documentary Crip Camp. Winner of the Sundance Film Festival’s Audience Award for U.S. Documentary, Crip Camp is the story of a groundbreaking summer camp for teens with disabilities, which helped to build a movement, forging a new path toward greater equality.
The discussion will feature the film’s co-producers Nicole Newnham and UC San Diego alumnus Jim LeBrecht ’78; Syreeta Nolan, current UC San Diego undergraduate student and Underrepresented Student Officer; and Rosemary McDonnell-Horita, disability activist and UC San Diego alumna.
Keep an eye out for more details. If you haven’t seen Crip Camp, I highly recommend watching it prior to the panel discussion. You can view the trailer here and find the full movie on Netflix. (Please note: the trailer and film contain adult language and themes.)

Asymptomatic COVID-19 Testing: All faculty, staff and student employees are strongly encouraged to schedule a voluntary, no-cost asymptomatic COVID-19 test regularly, ideally every 12-16 days. Frequent testing is one of our most powerful tools in keeping our campus safe by quickly identifying and containing any potential outbreaks of COVID-19. Schedule your asymptomatic test »
Voluntary COVID-19 Smartphone Notification Project: Last week, Chancellor Khosla and UC San Diego Health CEO Patty Maysent shared information about a new pilot program approved by the State of California. The voluntary program, which will launch later this month at UC San Diego, uses Apple and Google smartphone technology to quickly notify individuals when a COVID-19 exposure may have occurred. Stay tuned for more details to come. Learn more »
Flu Vaccines: We are finalizing plans for providing flu vaccines for campus staff and academic employees. In particular, we will be focusing on support and ease of access for employees who currently work on campus by providing a campus flu vaccination location at the Price Center as well as through three drive up locations. Employees who are working remotely are encouraged to visit their primary care provider or a local health clinic or pharmacy to receive their flu shot. Any employee who needs to come to campus November 1 or later will need to have a flu shot in advance. View flu vaccine FAQs from the Office of the President. More information will be available soon.
Again, thank you for all you are doing. It’s incredible what our community of staff, faculty and students can accomplish when we work together.
Stay safe and be well,
