Search for the Dean of the School of Global Policy and Strategy

UC San Diego is pleased to invite nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the School of Global Policy and Strategy. We have enlisted the assistance of leading executive search firm Isaacson, Miller to help us manage the search process. Cristina Della Coletta, Dean of the Division of Arts and Humanities, has agreed to chair the Search Advisory Committee, whose members are listed below. 

Reporting directly to the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the Dean serves as the academic and administrative leader of the School of Global Policy and Strategy and has responsibility for its full range of educational, scholarly and engagement programs. The Dean is responsible for the recruitment and retention of a diverse community of scholars, for sustaining an inclusive environment where all can thrive and for maintaining an effective administrative structure to support the school’s programs and activities. The Dean will provide academic, intellectual and administrative leadership in enhancing the School, and will promote excellence in all aspects of the School’s research, teaching and service missions. Moreover, the Dean is responsible for providing academic leadership to the faculty for programs leading to Masters and Ph.D. degrees, as well as for executive education, joint degree programs with other campus units and the school’s role in undergraduate education. The Dean will drive implementation of plans and program improvement in the areas of instruction; research; public service; academic planning; development and management of resources; and articulation of the goals and programs of the School with the professions, industry and government at the local, state, national and international levels.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
Scope/Responsibilities:
● Provides leadership in the development of new academic initiatives and is instrumental in the review and approval processes for establishment of new graduate and undergraduate programs or degrees, and curricular changes within the School.
● Provides leadership on programs and initiatives that improve the overall student experience.
● Authorizes the initiation of faculty recruitment, including negotiations. Approves faculty start-up packages.
● Maintains provision control of permanent and temporary faculty FTE and Teaching Assistant FTE allocated to the School.
● Reviews and/or has final authority for School of Global Policy and Strategy faculty, adjunct faculty and lecturer appointments, merits, leaves of absence, and promotions. Has final signature authority for temporary faculty appointments.
● Serves as the School’s academic affirmative action officer for all academic affirmative action compliance documents.
● Serves as the advocate and champion to the larger campus community on efforts to promote diversity, equal opportunity, inclusion, and the UC San Diego Principles of Community.
● Responsible for promoting an environment in which the highest standards of ethical conduct are understood to be a primary responsibility of all members of the School.
● Cultivates local and national scientific and industrial affiliation and support.
● Co-supervises the Directors of Development and Communications assigned to the division and works closely with the Campus External Relations/Development Office to engage alumni and cultivate major gifts in support of the School’s teaching, research, and public service programs.
● Cultivates partnerships with other campus units, such as the Wertheim School of Public Health, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the Jacobs School of Engineering, the Division of Social Sciences, the Rady School of Management, and the Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute in developing opportunities for interdisciplinary programs and initiatives.
● Responsible for overseeing the financial performance of the School including the avoidance of and recovery of overspending within the School.
● Responsible for overseeing the School’s budgetary and space proposals and for the allocation of financial and space resources within the School.
● Reviews and approves acquisition of infrastructure support for computing and communications.
● Responsible for short- and long-range planning of minor and major capital improvement projects for the division. Approves requests for renovations and alterations in the School’s space. Serves on Building Advisory Committees of all GPS capital projects, usually as chair.
● Represents the School of Global Policy and Strategy on various General Campus, campus-wide and University-wide committees as designated. Represents the School at the local, state, national, and international levels.
Skills and/or experience necessary to perform this position:
● A distinguished record of teaching, research, and professional service appropriate for a tenured Full Professor appointment at UC San Diego.
● Leadership experience promoting research, academic excellence, and adaptation to the challenges and opportunities facing higher education today, especially in an interdisciplinary environment;
● An equity-minded leadership style and a demonstrable commitment to enhancing diversity and promoting inclusion; experience in recruiting and developing excellent faculty, staff, and students, including women and members of racially and ethnically underrepresented groups;
● Excellence in research, and experience bringing research to policy;
● Successful and progressively responsible administrative roles, with demonstrated achievement and experience managing staff and budgets, and with long-range planning;
