Reminder: Zoom Bombing Prevention and Reports
As classes resume next week, we’ll continue to rely on Zoom for instruction, meetings and other ways we connect and interact. We have heard from other universities and school districts nationwide of increased incidents of meeting hijacking – also called “Zoom-bombing.”
Whether you’re using Zoom for the first time this quarter, or continuing as an experienced user, we recommend exercising due diligence and caution using Zoom and how you manage online meetings. The following steps can be taken to mitigate videoconferencing hijacking threats, and instructions on how to implement can be found here.
*Do not make meetings or classrooms public. In Zoom, there are two options to make a meeting private:
1. Require a meeting password 2. Use the waiting room feature and control the admittance of guests
*Do change the default setting in Zoom to permit only authenticated users
*Do not share a link to a teleconference or classroom on an unrestricted publicly available social media post. Provide the link directly to specific people.
*Manage screen sharing options. In Zoom, change screen sharing to “Host Only”
If you are a victim of a Zoom bombing, please report it as soon as possible with the date, time, meeting host and if possible screen captures of the offending material to zoombombing@ucsd.edu. It will be investigated and reported to the most appropriate campus unit, including the Office for the Prevention of Harassment & Discrimination (OPHD), if it is behavior that constitutes harassment or discrimination.
