Dear Colleagues,
Before sharing my regular news and updates for UC San Diego staff, I want to acknowledge the trauma and stress we are collectively experiencing beginning with the events of Wednesday of last week. We watched with shock as a mob of rioters violently breached security at the U.S. Capitol building, challenging and threatening the very foundation of our democracy. We must also confront the clear difference in the response of law enforcement to the brazen lawlessness at the Capitol compared to last year’s protests of systematic racism and inequity. To echo Chancellor Khosla’s message to the campus community, the events of last week reinforce the importance of our ongoing work to create a diverse, equitable and inclusive campus community at UC San Diego and beyond.
Many of us share heightened feelings of anxiety related to these events. Please remember that you have access to counseling support through the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program. Learn more and schedule an appointment with an FSAP counselor »
Health and Safety Updates
Return to Learn Winter 2021 Plan: I encourage you to review the winter 2021 plan for UC San Diego’s Return to Learn program. As a reminder, Campus staff who are working remotely should continue to do so at least through May 31, 2021, unless otherwise notified by your supervisor or vice chancellor. COVID-19 Testing: UC San Diego has developed a multifaceted, proactive strategy to detect and prevent the transmission of COVID-19 in our campus community to the greatest extent possible. One of our most critical tactics in this work is regular testing of students, faculty and staff.
- Required Testing: All UC San Diego employees (staff, faculty, research, clinical) who report to work on campus are required to get a COVID-19 test on a weekly basis. Tests are provided for free and during normal working hours. Learn more about required COVID-19 testing for on-site employees »
- No-Cost Asymptomatic Testing: All UC San Diego faculty, staff and student employees have access to voluntary, no-cost asymptomatic COVID-19 testing as often as weekly. Learn more about employee testing options »
- COVID-19 Test Vending Machines: Campus employees can also pick up a self-administered COVID-19 test kit at one of numerous vending machines across campus. A few important notes about using the COVID-19 test vending machines:

Daily Email Notifications: UC San Diego employees are now receiving a daily email with the subject line “Required Daily Notification of Potential Workplace Exposure Locations”. When UC San Diego receives notice that an individual infected with COVID‐19 was present at a UC San Diego worksite, the impacted locations are shared on the Return to Learn dashboard (effective January 1, 2021). The daily email includes the impacted locations and a link to the dashboard. We are required to notify you daily about these potential exposures, in accordance with California law.
Please review the daily dashboard to determine if you were present at an impacted worksite during the periods indicated. The daily email also includes information on how to get tested, the campus disinfection and safety plan, and the COVID-19 related benefits available to you as a UC San Diego employee.
