Wastewater Monitoring Dashboard Tool
Over the last several months, UC San Diego has been rolling out a waste water detection system as one intervention tool in the fight against the virus that causes the disease COVID-19. As of today, there are 70 active samplers across campus (covering >200 buildings) and we are currently installing an additional 70 samplers. When completed, there will be 200 samplers installed by the end of winter quarter. To increase access to this information and reinforce science-driven decision-making in support of Public Health, a new tool has been added to UC San Diego’s Daily Dashboard.
WHAT DOES THE WASTEWATER MONITORING DASHBOARD TOOL DO?
Every day, we test wastewater samples across campus for SARS-CoV-2 virus. The results are analyzed by our geospatial data system, which traces the sewer system to determine which buildings could be possible sources of the positive wastewater signals. The wastewater monitoring dashboard tool presents daily information on what buildings are currently being monitored (in that the wastewater flows into one of our detectors), and which buildings are possible sources of a positive wastewater signal.
If your building is associated with a positive wastewater signal, it may mean that there are one or more infected individuals in the building. If you used the restroom in a building associated with a positive wastewater signal on that day, out of an abundance of caution, you should get tested promptly. Additionally, we encourage you to remain vigilant about masking and social distancing.

Self-administered testing is available for students and employees at multiple locations throughout campus visit returntolearn@ucsd.edu for details on locations and times. Vending machine with kits containing all materials for testing and instructions are now located across campus. Self-administered testing does NOT require an appointment and testing can be done at your convenience. Completed tests are returned to any of the pick-up locations and placed in the designated drop box.
Additional UC San Diego Heath testing sites are distributed throughout San Diego as well as the Price Center and Athena Circle for students and Campus employees. Testing at these locations requires an appointment which you can schedule your test through these links:
We are sharing this information as part of our ongoing efforts to stay ahead of this virus in our community. Further information is available at the Return to Learn website and on Blink.
In closing, we would like to thank the team of Faculty, Staff and Student Leaders who developed the new waste water tool and express our appreciation to our colleagues who have been working tirelessly to keep our community safer.
