A Conversation on Creating a More Racially Just Campus Environment at UC San Diego
| |
Please join the Office for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion on Tuesday, January 26 at 1:00 p.m. for a conversation on creating a more racially just campus environment at UC San Diego with Dr. Kathy Obear, bestselling author and Co-Founder of the Social Justice Training Institute. During the summer of 2020, UC San Diego launched the Chancellor’s 21-Day Anti-Racism Challenge. The campuswide initiative encouraged a shared understanding of what it means to be anti-racist and how to become agents of change alongside our communities of color.
The recent increase in violence further signifies that we are at a critical turning point in our nation. Increased allyship is more important than ever to our advancement as a more equitable society and academic institution.
The university's commitment to being an inclusive campus is goal two of five in our UC San Diego Strategic Plan, which guides our effort to be a leading student-centered, research-focused, service-oriented, public university. My unit led the creation of our Strategic Plan for Inclusive Excellence to direct UC San Diego's path forward in realizing this transformational goal.
To support our broader strategic efforts, we are expanding our learning initiatives to help deepen and develop greater capacity for anti-racism work and allyship, beginning with a conversation on creating a more racially just campus environment at UC San Diego.
I invite you to join me as I sit down with Dr. Kathy Obear on Tuesday, January 26, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:15 p.m., to discuss effective strategies and behavioral norms to foster allyship and help us all become better leaders, educators and citizens.
Through our collective efforts we will cultivate a community of care and strengthen our commitment to inclusive excellence.
Register: Creating a More Racially Just Campus Environment at UC San Diego
Is it enough to simply not say or do anything racist? Or do these times call for our White leaders, faculty, staff, and students to develop more capacity and courage to be active allies and change agents to dismantle racism and create more racially inclusive and just campus environments?
In this engaging conversation, Dr. Becky Petitt, Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and Dr. Kathy Obear, President of the Center for Transformation and Change and Co-Founder of the Social Justice Training Institute, explore many of the critical skills and actions that will help White allies to move beyond being “non-racist” to being an active and effective anti-racist member of the UC San Diego community.
Join us on Tuesday, January 26, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. for this important conversation and Q&A session. Registration is open now to all students, staff, faculty and alumni. The meeting link and password will be emailed to you automatically after you submit your registration. About Dr. Kathy Obear
