UC San Diego Celebrates Black History Month Throughout February
All students, faculty and staff are invited to participate in a series of virtual programs throughout the month of February in observance and celebration of Black History Month. This year’s theme is “The Black Family: Representation, Identity, and Diversity,” which explores the African diaspora, and the spread of Black families across the United States.
Numerous events will be held, including the UC San Diego’s 19th Annual Black History Month Celebration and Scholarship Awards Ceremony. This virtual celebration will feature keynote talks by Starla Lewis, Professor Emeritus and global teacher of self-love and UC San Diego Alumna Helen V. Griffith, who is Inaugural Executive Director of The Preuss School UC San Diego; as well as recognition of Black student scholars at UC San Diego.
In recognition of this annual event, two hours of administrative leave with pay have been approved for employees to attend a UC San Diego Black History Month activity. Supervisors, upon request, may approve the use of such leave when the absence does not infringe upon the performance of required job duties or patient care.
On behalf of the campus community, we would like to express our sincere appreciation to the members of the UC San Diego Black History Month Planning Committee for their work to coordinate these educational and celebratory campus activities.
